Restoring Hope in Mbalame Village
A Summer Day That Changed Everything
I still remember the warm summer day in November 2022 as if it were yesterday. The sun hung low over the dusty paths of Mbalame, a remote village in Central Malawi near Salima. I had come to meet the village chiefs, not realising that God was about to open a completely new chapter in my life.
As we greeted one another under the shade of a tree, I saw something in their eyes I will never forget: a mixture of hope, disbelief, and quiet desperation. They were overwhelmed that anyone would be interested in helping their children.
They led me to a small, dilapidated building they called a school. Inside, a few children sat on the dusty floor. Some little girls, with babies tied on their backs, were singing soft Chichewa songs. Their innocence in the middle of such hardship touched me deeply.
They stole my heart immediately.
In that moment, I knew that God had sent me to this place to be a destiny helper to hundreds of children and families.
When a Vision Takes Root
As we walked together, the chiefs showed me a piece of land they were willing to sell. Standing there, surrounded by dry soil and simple homes, I could see something different in my spirit.
A vision began to unfold:
- A place called Restoring Hope
- A Pre-school and Training Centre
- Big vegetable gardens and a fruit forest
- A safe space where children would be fed, taught, and loved
- A training hub where women would learn skills to provide for their families
What started as a conversation under a tree was becoming a God-given blueprint for transformation in Mbalame.
From a Broken Building to a Place of Hope
On 3 August 2023, we broke ground.
The old, run-down building made way for a large, modern pre-school with proper classrooms and a spacious kitchen. The kitchen was designed not only to prepare meals for the children, but also to train women to cook and preserve food.
The land was prepared for a vegetable garden, and soon seeds were planted. These gardens began to produce vegetables that would help us serve nutritious meals to severely malnourished children—children who had been living on the edge of survival.
The speed and scale of progress over the next four months was nothing less than a glorious miracle.
A Day of Celebration: 3 December 2023
On 3 December 2023, we held the official opening of the Restoring Hope project.
Our keynote speaker, Minister Kaliati, joined community leaders, families, and children to celebrate what God had done in such a short period of time. Many people were astonished by the extraordinary progress that had taken place in just four months.
There was singing, dancing, tears of joy, and a deep sense of gratitude.
We all understood that this was not just a building project.
This was the beginning of many beautiful testimonies yet to come.
To God Be All the Glory
Today, when I see children running and laughing in the school yard, when I walk through the growing gardens, and when I watch women learning skills that will change their families’ futures, I am reminded again:
This is the work of God.
He has shown His provident care and His great love for the poorest of the poor in this world. I am humbled that He chose me to play a part in His story in Mbalame Village.
